The Sacred Nature Initiative Pledge

SNI-pledge-step-01

It all starts at home with your “personal footprint”

Living “sustainably” has become a tired byword for living within the ability for the environment to accommodate each of our demands on its bounty. When people talk about the population crisis it is as much about consumption as it is about numbers. Material wealth should no longer be the measure of how successful you are. Many of us consume far more than we need. If we are to put the future wellbeing of the Planet at the heart of the way we live, we must learn to live with less. To “tread lightly” captures the ethos that the Sacred Nature Initiative (SNI) hopes to embed. We need to make a pledge to ourselves and our families, and to both our local community and global community – to be informed.

We must teach our children the 'History' of Nature

Exposing them to the great outdoors and the wonder of the natural world. We all need to understand that Nature is at the centre, that Nature is the great provider. We cannot survive without Nature - it is the air we breathe, the food we eat, the shelter we need to feel safe, and the source of our deepest joy. Our technology only exists through its reliance on the rich organic and inorganic environment that is our home - Planet Earth. The ancient idea of “Mother Earth” is a reminder of the nurturing environment that gave birth to all life, and that prosperity - real prosperity - comes from nurturing and respecting our environment rather than viewing it as an inexhaustible commodity that we own.

Don’t wait for the government to fix it.

It is up to all of us to make a start, to spread the word. Each of us must discover our own Sacred Nature. The SNI “challenge” is to grow your own community group and then connect it with others, sharing in the joy of discovering Nature’s global web of life and how you can help to protect it. Think big - we can always downsize later - is our motto.

Join your local Environmental group.

Take time exploring your nearest green space. Join and visit your nearest Nature Reserve. Make an annual visit to one of your countries National Parks or Protected Areas.

Think carefully before traveling overseas of the impact this will have on the environment.

Remember, the SNI way is to Tread Lightly – to Do No Harm. Make every holiday a time of gratitude and a rich source of learning and self-reflection. If you are visiting wildlife parks and reserves overseas be sure to stay at eco-friendly camps and lodges. Places that are committed to nurturing the local environment and are mindful of the gift of water, the safe disposal of sewage, and have strong links to the local community and wildlife conservation.

SNI-pledge-step-06

Stop for a moment and think how fortunate you are.

We take so much for granted: access to clean water and medical care, the gift of higher education, good job prospects, owning our own homes or able to rent high-end accommodation. The majority of the world are unable to enjoy this privileged lifestyle. Many of the world’s last great ecosystems, home to a rich source of biodiversity, are found in countries that are among the poorest on the Planet. Many indigenous communities have been forced from landscapes they inhabited for hundreds if not thousands of years, living sustainably with their environment. There is still so much we can learn from these ancient relationships, and the spiritual connection that people had with the place they called home. We need to encourage a more equitable sharing of resources, and acknowledge the hidden benefits the natural environment provides to all of us - and our businesses.

Give back.

By supporting the SNI you will be contributing to a global movement dedicated to helping to preserve our last wild places and nurturing local communities living with wildlife in a sustainable manner.

Resource Center

The core goal of the Sacred Nature Initiative is to Inspire, Educate and Conserve. With this ethos in mind, the SNI team has developed an extensive Resource Center to help educate and guide you in your conservation journey. Here you’ll find educational courses, case studies, and reading materials to advance your conservation knowledge.

Spotlights

Sacred-Nature-Initiative-homepage-03

The Sacred Nature Initiative has Spotlights focusing on one region at a time. During a Spotlight period SNI will provide deeper knowledge and insight into that particular ecosystem, and focus its attention on having the greatest impact possible.

Our first Spotlight is the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem – a region close to Jonathan & Angela’s hearts, and an area they have come to know intimately over the past 40 years. To learn more visit the link below.
